Yoga, Contemplative Pedagogy and Embodied Knowledge Systems
Yoga, Contemplative Pedagogy and Embodied Knowledge Systems
This theme approaches yoga and contemplative practice as rigorous knowledge systems rather than lifestyle trends. Rooted in the philosophical architecture of the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali, yoga is examined as a theory of mind, perception, and disciplined transformation — centered on the regulation of attention (citta-vṛtti-nirodha), ethical formation, and embodied inquiry. Participants engage classical concepts such as abhyāsa (sustained practice), vairāgya (non-attachment), and the kleśas (cognitive-affective distortions) alongside contemporary research in embodied cognition, contemplative pedagogy, affect regulation, and neuroplasticity.
The program situates yoga within broader academic conversations: How does embodied discipline reshape cognition and behavior? What is the relationship between attention, ethics, and leadership? How do contemplative traditions translate responsibly into modern educational and public health contexts? Through structured seminars, philosophy dialogues, practice–reflection cycles, anatomy and breath science workshops, and evidence-based evaluation labs, participants critically examine both the promises and limitations of wellness discourse.
Rather than presenting yoga as passive retreat, the theme frames it as disciplined study — integrating textual interpretation, embodied experimentation, and analytic reflection — culminating in an academically defensible well-being portfolio grounded in ethics, sustainability, and evidence-informed practice.
Participants will:
-
Interpret core philosophical concepts from the Yoga Sūtras (e.g., citta, kleśa, abhyāsa, vairāgya) within both classical and contemporary contexts.
-
Apply embodied cognition theory to analyze how posture, breath, and movement influence perception, emotional regulation, and decision-making.
-
Evaluate wellness claims using evidence-based health frameworks and harm-minimization principles.
-
Practice contemplative pedagogy methods (reflection cycles, attention training, inquiry circles) as educational tools.
-
Develop a safety-aware and ethically grounded personal well-being framework.
-
Produce an academically structured contemplative portfolio integrating philosophy interpretation, reflective logs, and applied wellness design.
-
Produce faculty-gradeable outputs including a food-system improvement memo, equity feasibility assessment, and mini-ethnographic culinary portfolio with analytic commentary.
