Sundarbans: Delta Risk, Livelihoods & Governance

Sundarbans: Delta Risk, Livelihoods & Governance

Overview

This 13-day field seminar examines climate vulnerability in one of the world’s most exposed delta systems. Students begin in Kolkata with conceptual grounding in environmental justice theory, delta ecology, and participatory research methods.

Field immersion in the Sundarbans focuses on mangrove ecosystems, salinity intrusion, migration narratives, gendered labor patterns, and governance mapping. Students conduct participatory vulnerability mapping, stakeholder interviews, and institutional analysis to understand distributive exposure.

The final phase translates field evidence into a climate justice adaptation proposal grounded in feasibility and equity.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students will:

  • Map mangrove ecosystems and settlement vulnerability.
  • Conduct semi-structured interviews on risk perception and adaptation.
  • Analyze institutional response mechanisms in disaster governance.
  • Evaluate migration as adaptation strategy.
  • Develop a justice-centered adaptation proposal grounded in field evidence.
